The American Red Cross has issued a state of emergency for blood supply. They are experiencing over 60,000 fewer blood donations nationwide over the span of two months, making it one of the worst shortages Red Cross has experienced. It’s normal for blood supply to run low during the holidays and summer because people are traveling more. However, more traveling means more accidents can occur.

CHLA hopes to get 65 donors in July to restock the blood supply. Thankfully, no surgeries have been canceled or postponed because of the shortage. However, Los Angeles has been instructed to cancel elective surgeries which do not involve a medical emergency. If donors are still running low, these seasonal shortages we’re experiencing can turn into a year-long shortage.

The freshness of the blood is significant, especially in a children’s hospital. Blood donations expire after 7 days, so it’s essential to have donors all year round. The neediest group in CHLA is the neo-natal intensive care unit. The neo-natal intensive care unit cares for newborn babies. So, it’s important to have healthy and fresh blood donations for them.

The need is critical. Our compounding pharmacy near Santa Monica knows you can make a difference. Give blood, save a life.

To be a CHLA donor, you must be 17 years or older and weigh 110 pounds or above. You must meet recent travel criteria and present a photo ID. CHLA’s blood center is open 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 6 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays. You can make an appointment with Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles by calling (323) 361 – 2441 or by visiting www.chladonateblood.org.
